Astronomers have imaged a shock wave around the white dwarf RXJ0528+2838, which is 730 light-years away. The study indicates that the energy needed to sustain this structure exceeds the system's available accretion. RXJ0528+2838 is unusual as it shows no signs of a typical accretion disc and has an asymmetric nebula. Observations reveal that the white dwarf's magnetic energy can only partially explain the bow shock's longevity.
