The bustling urban logistics and food delivery networks across Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram came to a grinding halt today as thousands of gig workers launched an indefinite strike. The massive protest, organized by the unified Gig and Platform Workers Union, is directed against major quick-commerce and food delivery aggregators. Workers are protesting against recent algorithmic updates that have drastically reduced their per-order payout and increased delivery radii without proper compensation.
The Algorithm vs. The Worker
According to union leaders, the new automated dispatch algorithms penalize riders for traffic delays that are completely out of their control. Many workers report that their daily earnings have plummeted by nearly 35% despite logging over 12 hours on the road. The protestors are demanding the implementation of a base minimum wage guarantee and transparent payout structures that cannot be altered unilaterally by backend AI systems.
Demands for Social Security and Insurance
Beyond daily wages, the striking partners are heavily emphasizing the need for comprehensive social security. Given the high physical risk of navigating Delhi traffic, the union has submitted a formal petition to the labor ministry demanding mandatory health insurance, accidental coverage, and pension benefits for all registered gig workers.
