According to a report by the Times of India, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has officially confirmed that the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections will proceed strictly on schedule. Speaking on the timeline, he stated that the polls are set for February and March 2027.
Constitutional Requirements Override Census Delays
Despite ongoing discussions regarding the national census, the Chief Election Commissioner emphasized that the Census will not cause any delay to the electoral process. He cited mandatory constitutional requirements that dictate the timely conduct of state legislative elections, ensuring the democratic timeline remains undisturbed.
Key Updates on Bypolls, Electoral Rolls, and Voting Rules
During his announcements, the Chief Election Commissioner addressed several other critical administrative matters. He declared that there will be no bypolls conducted in three vacant constituencies.
Additionally, election authorities have assured the public that proactive steps will be taken to implement necessary corrections for any existing electoral roll errors. However, the Election Commission explicitly ruled out the installation of CCTV inside voting booths.
When asked about modernizing the voting infrastructure, Gyanesh Kumar clarified that online voting is currently not under consideration by the election body. Standard physical voting procedures will remain fully in place for the electorate in 2027.
